An entrepreneur at heart, he thinks in terms of what the business owner actually needs, not what the compliance calendar demands.
James runs the tech and operations side of Utile, always looking for smarter, more efficient ways to work. He’s the one who pushes the firm to adopt new tools, streamline how work gets done, and keep things improving. Outside of work, football has always been a big part of his life, along with pushing himself in the gym, winding down with a sauna and ice bath, and a good book.
Ellie runs the day-to-day client relationship at Utile. Eight years deep in accountancy and finance, she’s the one most clients hear from first, with calm, tailored, reliable answers to whatever’s in the inbox. Outside the office, she bakes, performs with her function band around the country, and unwinds with her two cats.

We’re based in Alcester, a small market town between Stratford-upon-Avon and Redditch. Clients drop in for a coffee when they’re passing through, and Zoom works just as well wherever you are in the UK.

Yes. You’ll have a primary point of contact (usually Ellie) for day-to-day questions, but the whole team is copied on every meaningful decision. Sam jumps in on strategy and tax, James on tech and operations. No one stays in their lane if you need them.

Deliberately small. We’d rather look after 183+ clients really well than 1,000 clients invisibly. Right now the team is Sam (CEO & founder), James (COO), and Ellie (Head of Client Services). As we grow, the ethos stays the same: direct access to the people doing the actual work.
Yes. Our clients are all over the UK. Everything runs cloud-first: Zoom for meetings, Xero or QuickBooks for the books, email and phone for everything in between. The Alcester office is where we’re based, not where you need to be.
Primarily Xero, with QuickBooks and FreeAgent for clients who already use them. James handles the onboarding and migration, including chart-of-accounts clean-up and integrating your bank feeds, invoicing, and payroll tools.
Our clients cluster into three groups: business owners (typically Ltd companies under £5m turnover), entrepreneurs with multiple income streams, and creators (online businesses, agencies, coaches, content-led brands).
