Our story

Traditional firms weren’t cutting it. So we built a different one.

Sam Taylor founded Utile after eight years inside traditional UK accountancy firms. He kept seeing the same pattern: clients spoken to once a year, treated like case files, charged premium fees for bare-minimum compliance work.

He knew there was a better way. Utile was built to prove it.

Today Utile runs as a tight, close-knit team. Sam leads on tax strategy. James runs the tech and operations. Ellie owns the day-to-day client relationships. When you become a Utile client, you get direct access to the people doing the work, every month, on speed dial.

No call centres. No account managers who disappear. No year-end surprises. Just modern, proactive accountancy, built the way it should have been from the start.

I knew there had to be a better way than firms that see their clients once a year and treat them like case files.

How we show up

Three values. Proven in every client conversation.

Modern

Cloud-first, not filing cabinets.

Xero, QuickBooks, FreeAgent. Real-time dashboards, automated bookkeeping, and accounts you can actually understand, not a shoebox of receipts once a year.

Sam and the team have been amazing helping me with my first tax return. This team make everything so much simpler and stress free.

Dynamic

Your strategy moves when your business does.

We don’t file your annual accounts and disappear until March. Your tax strategy is revisited whenever the business shifts, a new product, a new hire, a new revenue line, a structural change.

Moving to Utile completely revolutionised our business. They’ve made us more profitable, saved us thousands from HMRC. They could change your life.

Proactive

We phone you before you phone us.

You won’t hear from us once a year. You’ll hear from us whenever something in your numbers is about to matter, a tax deadline, an opportunity, a risk, a decision that can be made better with a quick call.

I value my time, and Utile have allowed me to have it back whilst not worrying about my accounts. If you want a premium service, it’s always worth it.

Chief Executive Officer & Founder
Founder. Strategist. Entrepreneur at heart.

Sam founded Utile after eight years inside traditional accountancy firms. He leads on tax strategy, set-up of group structures, and the long-horizon planning that turns a good business into a saleable one. An entrepreneur at heart, he thinks in terms of what the business owner actually needs, not what the compliance calendar demands.

Footballer. Gym enthusiast. Ice-bath convert.

James runs the tech and operations side of Utile, always looking for smarter, more efficient ways to work. He’s the one who pushes the firm to adopt new tools, streamline how work gets done, and keep things improving. Outside of work, football has always been a big part of his life, along with pushing himself in the gym, winding down with a sauna and ice bath, and a good book.

Baker. Band singer. Cat-mum of two.

Ellie runs the day-to-day client relationship at Utile. Eight years deep in accountancy and finance, she’s the one most clients hear from first, with calm, tailored, reliable answers to whatever’s in the inbox. Outside the office, she bakes, performs with her function band around the country, and unwinds with her two cats.

“When we set up Bloxbase, I wanted to work with a team that had the same values and vision as we did. UTILE were a perfect fit. Great advice from day one, always at the end of the phone, always looking at the future. Over-and-above service I’ve never had from previous accountants.”

Before you get in touch

Common questions about the team

Will I work with a dedicated accountant?

Yes. You’ll have a primary point of contact (usually Ellie) for day-to-day questions, but the whole team is copied on every meaningful decision. Sam jumps in on strategy and tax, James on tech and operations. No one stays in their lane if you need them.

Do I always speak to a real person, or get bounced around?

Real person, every time. There’s no call centre, no ticketing queue, no ‘account manager’ who escalates to someone else. You have the direct email of the person who’s actually looking after your numbers.

How big is the Utile team?

Deliberately small. We’d rather look after 183+ clients really well than 1,000 clients invisibly. Right now the team is Sam (CEO & founder), James (COO), and Ellie (Head of Client Services). As we grow, the ethos stays the same: direct access to the people doing the actual work.

Can we work together if I’m not near Warwickshire?

Yes. Our clients are all over the UK. Everything runs cloud-first: Zoom for meetings, Xero or QuickBooks for the books, email and phone for everything in between. The Alcester office is where we’re based, not where you need to be.

What software do you use?

Primarily Xero, with QuickBooks and FreeAgent for clients who already use them. James handles the onboarding and migration, including chart-of-accounts clean-up and integrating your bank feeds, invoicing, and payroll tools.

Do you work with my industry?

Our clients cluster into three groups: business owners (typically Ltd companies under £5m turnover), entrepreneurs with multiple income streams, and creators (online businesses, agencies, coaches, content-led brands). If you’re outside those, book a free call and we’ll be honest about whether we’re the right fit.
